Wet mount scanning was a popular fad a while back.  Epson came out with a no mess Digital ICE option that can do an almost perfect job in cleaning up an image, while retaining excellent sharpness. Whereas wet mount scanning on a flat bed scanner does not. Now, as good as ICE is, some images will suffer from drastic sharpness loss. So you just have to test it out.

If you have a scratched up movie film, wet gate scanning is a great option for cleaning up the film that a pro lab can do. I believe wet mount scanning was an offshoot from wet gate movie film scanning.

Here is an example of what wet gate scanning of movie film can do:

The tests below show how Epson’s Digital ICE Technology  performs in cleaning up a 35mm slide. It increases the scanning time significantly, raising the time by 300 to 500%.

Both examples below have had no post processing, color / exposure correction or spotting except to reduce the TIFF files to JPEGS. They are raw scans from slides. The bottom image has had Epson Digital ICE Technology applied during the scanning process.

Here is an example of image loss from using Epson ICE technology on a scan of a glass stereo slide.

(NOTE: First glass slide scan had some hand spotting done, so it is not a good comparison of ICE for dust reduction. This test shows the degradation and artifacts that ICE can produce.)

Bottom scan is with ICE and shows image loss to fabric they are sitting on and eyebrows and hairline of girl.
